30 August – 19 September, EPLO Sounio Office

The Academy of European Public Law study session at the Sounio Office for 2009 is now over.

This year’s session explored the relationship between globalization and public law, the law of European integration in times of crisis, public powers with respect to the global economy, administrative justice in the EU Member States and EC competition law in a comparative perspective, as well as the EU charter of fundamental rights and the right to equality on a global scale.

Committed to excellence in the teaching and learning experience, the Academy had assembled for this year’s session a group of academics that included professor J.-B. Auby (Director of the Governance and Public Law Center, Sciences Po),  Professor L. Azoulai (Pantheon-Assas Paris II University), Professor M. Conticelli (University of Rome Tor Vergata), Professor M. Fromont (University of Paris 1 Pantheon-Sorbonne), Professor G. Gerapetritis (National and Capodistrian University of Athens), Professor E. Spiliotopoulos (Member of the Academy of Athens), Professor S. Vlachopoulos (National and Capodistrian University of Athens) and Professor I. Wendt (Erasmus University Rotterdam).

Considering intercultural dialogue as an integral part of education, the Academy brings together students from diverse backgrounds and a wide range of countries. This year the thirty two students that attended the session came from France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Latvia, Morocco, Netherlands, Portugal, Romania, Spain, Turkey, and the United Kingdom. As is the custom, the students had the opportunity to further enrich their knowledge on European public law by attending, in addition to the Academy’s session, the EGPL (the Scientific Council of the EPLO) Annual Reunion that took place on 11-13 September.

The Academy of European Public Law’s 15th study session began on 30 August and ended on 19 September at the EPLO Sounio Office.

ACADEMY OF EUROPEAN PUBLIC LAW
An EPLO Signature Initiative

Launched in 1995, the Academy of European Public Law has been the oldest and most esteemed educational program of the EPLO, assembling today the academic potential of forty eight universities from all over the world, partners to the EPLO in the program. The program offers leading specialized study sessions in the field of European Public Law to young jurists and scholars who wish to further their knowledge and skills on the reasoning and philosophy of the different national public law systems of European countries, as well as the divergences among them, under the instruction of eminent professors in the field drawn from the partner universities.

Annual Study Session at Sounio

The Annual Study Session at the EPLO Sounio Office involves an intensive study session of a three-week duration, conducted annually, offering a stand-alone qualification in European Public Law to young jurists and scholars coming from all over the world.

Each study session consists of a general lecture course and three seminars in topics varying from year to year, taught in English and French. Upon the successful completion of the session, students are awarded a Certificate of Attendance, while those students who want to obtain the Diploma in European Public Law have to attend two sessions, as well as prepare a dissertation and defend it before an ad hoc international jury panel.

More than four hundred students from a wide range of countries have attended the Academy’s study sessions over the years and approximately two hundred of those have been awarded the Diploma in European Public Law.

The Academy organizes extraordinary sessions throughout the year in locations other than the EPLO Sounio Office in partnership with higher education institutions in and outside of Greece.
